Matala

The most ancient village in Crete, located 66 klm from Heraklion on the south coast of the island.It was the second harbour of the Phaestos city of  in the Minoan period. The famous man made caves carved out of limestone cliffs is the highlight of the area. Once these caves served as houses for the fishermen that lived in Matala but in the 70's the place turned into one of the international hippie movement centres.

A semicircular fine beach and a sheltered bay make Matala an ideal place for bathing and relaxing.
