Ilithia cave

Ilithia Cave The cave of Ilithia is located 1klm south of Amnisos. It was the main place of worship of the goddess of birth, Ilithia. The locals call it "Neraidospilia", the cave of the fairies.

Excavations brought to light evidence which indicates that the cave served as a place for cult worship from the Neolithic period.

Idols of women nursing, praying or in the process of giving birth were found there. In the centre of the cave an altar surrounded by two stalagmites that have human shape can be seen.
