Milatos cave

Milatos Cave Milatos cave lies on a steep slope of a ravine, 3klm away from the fishing village of Milatos. The cave has 8 entrances side by side, covers an area of 2100sq.m and is more a series of caverns than one cave.

The exquisite stalactites and stalagmites form big pillars that separate the one hall from the other.

Milatos cave is known for the massacre that took place there in 1823, when 3600 men, women

and children sought refuge inside the cave in order to escape from the Turks. After 15 days they were forced to surrender and the army of Hassan Passa killed the men and sold the women and children as slaves in Egypt.

Their remains were buried in a war memorial in the cave as and a church dedicated to St. Thomas was built next to the cave in their memory too.
