Caves intro

More than 3000 caves are recorded in Crete.

Not only outstanding examples of nature's talent for interior decoration, like Sfendoni cave, but also of great scientific value, being of archaeological, paleontological and historical interest.

The Minoans began the custom of worshiping their gods in sacred caves and in shrines built on mountain peaks and on tops of hills, and evidence can be found in Ilithia and Kamares cave.

Most of the caves in Crete are connected with legends and traditions, like Ideon and Dikteon Andron which are considered the birth place of Zeus, the father of the Greek gods.

Melidoni and Milatos caves played an important role during the Turkish occupation.
