Agia Irini

The Agia Irini gorge is located 43klm southwest of the

city of Chania and from an altitude of 1200m it descends southwards into the Libyan sea. The gorge is 8klm long and 45-500m deep and easy to walk through.

A great and colourful variety of plants and herbs can be seen in Agia Irini gorge along with many animal species that find shelter in its wild and inaccessible environment.

The area of Agia Irini was inhabited since the prehistoric period and has many signs from man's existence there.

Ancient cities, temples, funeral sites and churches. In 1866, one thousand women and children escaped from the Turks through this gorge.
