Rouvas

Rouvas gorge is the main attraction of the village of Zaros. Past the village at the little lake of Zaros is the starting point of the gorge. A path is leading to one of the prettier places in Crete.

The forest at the beginning of Rouvas was destroyed by a fire in 1994. After a 20' walk the visitor meets the monastery of Ag. Nikolaos once deserted but recently inhabited again by monks followers of the old calendar.

The path ascends past the monastery and it takes ca. 2 hours to arrive at the chapel of St. Ioannis,

a magnificent place covered with plane trees and lots of water, wooden tables and benches, ideal for a picnic.
