The gorge of the dead

The Gorge of the Dead The gorge of the dead is located in Lassithi prefecture in east Crete. It starts at the village of Zakros and ends at the bay of Kato Zakros not far from the ruins of the ancient Minoan city.

Several caves can be found along the walls of the gorge, which used to be burial places in Minoan times and that's how it took its name.

The gorge is 8klm long and it takes about 2' hours to walk through. Depending on the season the stream dries up completely, but because it tends to flood in the spring, check in the village of Zakros to see if it is safe to hike.
