Askifou

Askifou A very beautiful and picturesque plateau, at an altitude of 730m, surrounded by the White mountains which gives the impression of an amphitheatre.

It is believed that Askifou plateau was a lake in prehistoric times. In the fertile land of the plateau plenty of wheat and potato crops can be found now.

The area has also a beautiful wild cypress forest and a Turkish castle on a hill right in the middle of it. In 1821 a fierce battle took place here between the Turks and the Sfakian partisans that resulted in victory in favour of the locals.
