Plains & Plateaus

Although Crete is mainly a mountainous island, the scenery is constantly changing. Several plains & plateaus are situated among the mountain ranges that dominate the island. Lassithi plateau with its thousands windmills is surrounded by dikti massive.

Nida plateau is situated at the base of mount Psiloritis and Askifou plateau in the White mountains.

At the head of Samaria gorge lies Omalos plateau at an altitude of about 1000m.

Messara plain is the largest in Crete and its fertile soil makes it the most important agricultural centre of Crete.
