Kournas

Numerous legends are attached to Kournas lake as it is a mystery why such an amount of water is found here and nowhere else in Crete.

Kournas is the only fresh water lake on the island and said to be bottomless. It is situated in the prefecture of Chania, only 4km away from Georgioupolis.

Sheltered by the surrounding mountains that are reflected in its calm waters, the lake has an idyllic setting, similar to alpine lakes. The atmosphere is calm and refreshing and very different compared to all the other rugged landscapes of Crete.

It is possible to swim in the lake but it is more fun to hire one of the pedal boats, do the tour and

get closer to nature.
