Zaros

Zaros is a mountain village on the southern slopes of Ida Mountains. Its 2500 inhabitants are mostly farmers and stockbreeders but the village is also known for its spring water and trout breeding.

Fresh trout is available in all the picturesque tavernas of the area.

The ancient city of Gortyna built an aqueduct in order to transport water from Zaros to cover its needs. The monasteries Vrondisi and Varsamonero are close enough and Zaros can be the starting point for the visits to most archaeological sites of Heraklion, Phaestos, Gortyna and Agia Triada. Zaros is also an ideal place for hiking and trekking.

The path that leads to Rouvas gorge is near the small man made lake not far from the village.
