Ierapetra

Ierapetra is the biggest town on the south coast of Crete. Built on the longest beach of the island, facing Africa, is the southernmost town of Europe.

Ierapetra is famous for its mild climate with a temperature that rarely drops below 12C all year long and an average number of sunshine that exceeds 340 days a year.

This area is one of the most important vegetable-growing centres in Greece. The intense cultivation of off season vegetable as well as tomatoes, cucumbers, bananas and melons is the major source

of income for the locals.

A walk along the sea front of the vivid town centre with the numerous restaurants, taverns and bars is a must. In the old town of Ierapetra remains of the Roman and the Turkish period can be seen along with the old Cretan house that accommodated Napoleon when he stopped in Ierapetra on

his way to Egypt.

In the Libyan sea 14klm away from Ierapetra is Chrissi island famous for its golden beaches and

the turquoise sea. Boats going to the island leave Ierapetra every morning.
