 The site of Knossos, the greatest centre of Minoan civilization, excavated by Sir Arthur Evans, is said to be the most important after the Acropolis in Athens.

Systematic archaeological excavations on the island have brought to light evidence which confirm the existence of life on Crete from the 6th millennium B.C.
