Monasteries

Arkadi There is historical evidence for the existence of more than 5000 byzantine churches and monasteries in Crete.

Most of them are really old and were built during the first and second Byzantine period.

Monasteries can be found in remote areas all over the island.

All of them have a long history and played an important role during the Turkish occupation and the liberation of Crete.

Some of the monasteries that are worth visiting are: Agia Triada, Arkadi, Chrisoskalitissa, Gouverneto, Moni Odigitrias, Preveli, Toplou, Varsamonero and Vrondisi.
